Our Conversation with Cecilia Abate

Cecilia Abate is a horror academic and is a veteran this year!

Which of your achievements to date are you most proud of?

A summary of the 2.5 years of research I’ve done on American Horror Story was recently published in Grim Magazine!

What’s your favorite horror film and why?

The Exorcist. A singularly disturbing and powerful religious fairy tale with some pretty interesting gender politics.

Who is your hero in the horror world and why?

The Soska twins. I didn’t even have to think about that one. The Soskas are good humans first and anything else second — they are kind, brilliant, great at what they do, and have a LOT of heart.

Share a practical tip for a woman who wants to do what you do.

Be singular. Be weird. Horror belongs to weird women.

Inspire someone who is not where they want to be in the industry yet.

Continue making connections and putting the work in — it WILL pay off and you probably have more people backing you than you know!

Scare the crap out of us with something you have done or plan on doing!

I once wrote a paper on colonialism in the Nightmare Before Christmas… nothing scarier than ruining your childhood.

What projects do you have coming up?

I’m hoping to get another 2 seasons of American Horror Story research done and then also finish a paper on either The Exorcist or American Mary.I’m hoping to get another 2 seasons of American Horror Story research done and then also finish a paper on either The Exorcist or American Mary.
