You are probably wondering why I’m giving away yogurt without making fun of it. Well, it’s because of childhood obesity. I mean I want it to not be. Some kids are too obese. Recently, Dannon Danimals® launched a national initiative called Rally for Recess. Five schools have the opportunity to win new playground equipment worth $20,000. And that will buy a lot of…parachutes and those red kick balls and whatever else they give kids to exercise with. Now through February 8, 2012 purchasers can find codes on Danimals® packaging and enter and register their school online. The top school in each of the five categories (based on size) with the most codes registered wins! (official rules).
Now, I am not getting compensated for this (I must be doing it wrong) but I do get to give away a six pack of the yogurt or a… *does that looking down my nose at the paper like I can’t see it*…soccer ball and a draw-string bag that say Danimals® on them. If it were me, I wouldn’t know what to pick. Can’t eat a soccer ball…can only kick yogurt a few times. But what you win is your problem. All I have to do is find out which one of you win it. So from now until September 23rd (at night sometime) if you leave a comment in this post you are entered. I would PREFER that your comment include an alternative way for kids to stay skinny (make dogs chase them, shake weights, etc.) but I can’t force you. But think about this kid and realize that you need to help save these kids, regardless of how funny they are.
So good luck. If you have a school in your neighborhood, check out the contest. And if you don’t then you must be some weird creep so just keep walkin’.
Update – this was won by “got3kids”
I was in no way compensated for this post. The prize was supplied by Dannon.
Less TV and take the wee ones to the beach/park/just outside man. That alone will help fight the bulge. I say this knowing full well I work in a cubicle now and really, really need to go out and do more. So I take the techo-kid and we do outside stuff. Good for both of us! This idea is awesome too, kudos to yogurt!
If you have an Xbox, get the Kinect and some games for it like Fruit Ninja. My kid goes nuts playing that and it’s fun to watch her go at it, too.
Wii had a lot of great interactive games too that get you moving. I personally love swordfighting. Man to my arms hurt after.
I’ve got a hyper dog. Someone lend me a kid to tire her out. I’ll even let them use the squeaky ball. Yes that’s right the ball that SQUEAKS.
I like yogurt.
My babies LOVE yogurt…gimme, gimme!!
I think more kids should pack lunches from home, where there is a certainty that the lunch/meal will/can be healthy. Or schools should offer more healthier options/varieties for kids.
My kids are always active. Trampoline is their best friend it seems!
I would say for kids to play outside more! When I was younger, we played outside all day! Now, kids play video games lol 🙂
Activity levels is a family thing! Once I got active so did they! and now it’s walks into town, laps around the school while waiting, push-ups before bed! lol We make it very normal to be so active. ^_^
Activity is SO important for kids! I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old, and I try to get on the floor and play with them as often as I can. If I’m not actively playing with them, I try to get them outside to play in the yard. They love to help me in the yard, etc. this year we had a big garden, and the boys loved to help weed, water and maintain it. 🙂

Ohhh! And I think it is so important for parents to lead by example. If parents are on the computer or watching tv, the kids will too, so parents need to be up and active too. Another thing we like to do is go places like the zoo (we get a yearly membership so we can go often), and the local parks.
Another GREAT activity is taking the kids Geocaching, gets them outdoors, exploring and walking!
My son has his father’s metabolism and the energy of a hummingbird, so I really don’t have to put much effort into keeping him thin. When he plays video games, he moves non-stop. It’s funny because people say video games interfere with exercise. Not with my kid though, he is convinced that in order to make his character jump properly, he must jump as well.
I’m the only one in my home that doesn’t love yogurt 🙂
That said, some of our kids struggle with their weight. We have them spend more time bike riding and playing outside and less time sitting on the couch watching tv and playing video games. We signed up for taekwondo too, but will actually DO it once the weather outside is not our friend.
Have your kid/kids run laps around the house. Time them with a stop watch or some kind of timer. Do this on a regular basis, keep a log of their times and see just how much their time decreases over the course of a month or so. Reward them with a trip to the movies or some other fun family activity. A good way to show them that with hard work and determination they can better themselves.
Lots of Fruits and Vegetables. Splurging occasionally on pizza or burgers can be fine if you balance it out with healthy, nutrient-rich food.
