Ahhh, 1994. It was a simpler time. O.J. Simpson hadn’t killed anybody, Anna Nicole Smith was alive and still on the happy side of curvy and Leslie Neilsen was still Lt. Frank Drebin of Police Squad. The makers of Airplane also made the Police Squad! show and movies and they really made the most of some basic comedy rules:
- If the joke is in the dialogue, make the background plain.
- If the joke is in the background, make the dialogue plain or just don’t have any.
- Nutshots = funny
You can see all of that and more in Naked Gun 33 1/3 The Final Insult. Priscilla Presley, old guys like George Kennedy being funny, the guy who was Time Rider in that really old movie: Time Rider and a million ridiculous jokes – pretty much the perfect movie. Doesn’t really matter if you are watching this one or the first one or the TV show, you will fall right into it. It’s that
dumb good. You know how I know? Because other people keep trying to do essentially the same thing and for some reason it doesn’t click the same way.
Some of the Scary Movies were good, but they were spoofs. They can’t REALLY make movies like Naked Gun now. Partly because a HUGE number of the people that were in them are dead or in jail, but also because they only spoofed genres, not specific movies. I mean, they have an Untouchables scene in 33 1/3 which makes 0 sense because that movie came out in 1987 ffs. And that’s the point. Spoofing cop shows is better than spoofing A cop show. So when the Wayans Brothers do their movies, at least the one’s I’ve watched, they hew too close to other movies as a plot device. JUST BE STUPID, THE DREBIN WAY!
Who could be Leslie Neilsen now? Has to be someone who was a serious actor in their 60s who just said the hell with it. Thoughts? Anyone?
