Our Conversation with Jess & Kelly

Jess & Kelly are rookies to the Women in Horror Month Celebration.  Their podcast is called: I Spit on your Podcast

What’s your show about?

It’s a monthly horror podcast where Jess puts down her knitting needles and Kelly steps away from the TV discuss horror movies and sometimes other horror mediums with thoughtful analysis, research, and passion. We choose a Horrific theme and run with it!

What are some of your favorite episodes?

Episode 3: Vampires and Sexuality and Episode 5: Rape-Revenge Genre: Is it Feminist or Filth?

How well do you think horror is represented in the podcast world?

J- I have always been a fan of podcasts and over the past few years, I have seen the horror genre gain more recognition in the podcasting field from storytelling to movie reviews and analysis. It has been great to see and I look forward to hearing more.

K- Horror is HUGE in podcasting. Everyone has one but not everyone puts an incredible amount of effort into them or do they want to make something of it. Horror podcasting is incredibly diverse though with it covering many aspects of the genre, from movies to literature, and to storytelling. Even throw in true crime, which is Horrific unto itself.

What about women-led podcasts? In your experience, are they common or rare in horror?

J – I still find they are rare but women are becoming more and more involved in various ways. For the past 3 years, I have been working to be more involved and see that change.

K- incredibly rare though there are more podcasts that have at least one woman involved or regularly have female guests. Women-led, or all women hosts, are the very rare ones. We are hoping to change that.

What podcast/podcaster influenced you to begin podcasting and why?

J – The Faculty of Horror with Andrea and Alex. Their academic approach to horror was what really inspired me to truly embrace the genre and want to engage publicly in the conversation.

K – Jessica. I never would have had a podcast if it wasnt for her! Faculty of Horror and Women in Caskets are my main, female led, inspirations when it comes to content and style.

Inspire someone who is just starting out in the podcast world.

J – never stop pursuing your dreams and passions.. you never know what can result from it and the amazing people who come into your life because of it

K – figure out your goals of the podcast and project. See if you are bringing anything new to the table and if so DO IT.

What’s your favorite experience as a woman horror podcaster so far?

J- Doing research and having what I call “ah-ha” moments when I realize something about a film or a connection and then getting to discuss it with one of my best friends. Then on top of that to receive support and have other people engage in the same conversation.

K- The support from people of all sexes and genders. Being a part of one of the only female-led horror podcasts out there that is giving a damn, working hard and producing content to be proud of.

What do you have coming up?

Explorations into John Carpenter, Space horror and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and so much more!
