One time when I was in college I asked my friend to toss me back my lighter.  It was a Zippo and the guy who threw it sucked at throwing things.  I had expected one of two things to happen.  One: the lighter would knock out all of my front teeth as my friend overcompensated for his throwing ineptitude by hucking it as hard as he could and getting it past me.  Or two: he would somehow hit himself in the balls with it and then light himself on fire.  But sometimes you get lucky and something you didn’t expect happens.  In this case, the lighter landed on its bottom 1/2 way across the table and slid, ever so delicately, right over to me.  Standing upright.  It was perfect.  And it could not be duplicated in 108108301831280310 years.

Which brings me to Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O’Connor.  She is not some kind of musical genius.  She was, for all intents and purposes, a one-hit wonder and the song was written by Prince.  Of course that’s not a huge criticism because in 1990 I think 95% of the songs in the world had been written by Prince (including the theme to L.A. Law).  He could have given the song to anyone but he gave it to the Irish girl with short hair.  And she sang it.  She sang the shit out of it.  And the song landed on its bottom 1/2 way across the table and slid, ever so delicately, right in front of us.  Standing upright.  It was perfect.  And it doesn’t matter what she did after that.  Video and lyrics after the jump.

Sinead O’Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U

It’s been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

It’s been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they’d only remind me of you
I went to the doctor n’guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said girl u better try to have fun
No matter what you’ll do
But he’s a fool
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

all the flowers that you planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard
But I’m willing to give it another try
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
