I know that the biggest news about U2 right now is their stupid Spider Man thing, but they hold a special place in my heart for a very special reason. Let me ask you a question. What band, apart from U2, got famous in the 80’s and lived on to have a career in the 90’s? R.E.M. does not count, as they didn’t get main stream until they sold out. I can’t think of one. U2 got famous in the 80’s and stayed famous. Where’s The Power Station? The Fabulous Thunderbirds? When In Rome?
Nothing. I bet not even Janiss can find one. It’s just U2. This song isn’t their best. Isn’t their worst. Someday I will do One but since I don’t like repeating it will probably be like, a year. So you get Mysterious Ways. Don’t complain. You could be the fat dude from The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Video and lyrics after the jump.
Wait! Since I won’t be able to write about U2 for another year I have another question! What do you do with a band that has one guy who is really famous and one who is sort of famous? The Edge might have a stupid name but he’s something on his own, no? Maybe? Nobody knows who Robert Palmer’s guitarist was. Well, maybe some nerd does but seriously, what do you call it when only two guys in the band are really famous?
U2 – Mysterious Ways
Johnny take a walk
With your sister the moon
Let her pale light in
To fill up your room
You’ve been living underground
Eating from a can
You’ve been running away
From what you don’t understand…
Love
She’s slipping
You’re sliding down
She’ll be there
When you
hit the ground
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
O-o-oh
Johnny take a dive
With your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things
You can’t explain
To touch is to heal
To hurt is to steal
If you want to kiss the sky
Better learn how to kneel
On your knees boy
She’s the wave
She turns the tide
She sees the man inside the child
Yeah
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
Love
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
lift my days, light up my nights
Love
One day you will look… back
And you’ll see… where
You were held… how
By this love… while
You could stand there
You could move on this moment
Follow this feeling
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
O-o-oh
Oh love
Oh love, lover
Move you
The spirit moves in mysterious ways
Baby love me
Move
Baby love me
Move you
Baby love me
Move with it
She moves with it
Lift my days, light up my nights
Depeche Mode. Morrisey. The B-52s. Prince. Madonna. Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Shall I go on?
Red Hot Chili Peppers were not commercially successful in the 80’s. Out
Depeche Mode broke up in ’91 after whatever album Personal Jesus was on. They were not famous after that. Out.
Morrisey was never really famous. Ironically, Last of the Famous International Playboys is a great song.
Love Shack Album was in 89. They did nothing after that. Out.
Madonna – unless you count her crabs, she is not a band.
Mother’s Milk was ’89. In.
DM toured in ’94, again in ’01,’05, and ’09. They released albums in ’97, ’01,’05, and ’09. In.
Morrisey is famous, you freak. If he weren’t, you wouldn’t know who he is. The Smiths are famous and Morissey of his own accord is famous. In.
B-52’s released Roam in ’90, have done a buncha parody stuff for shows like The Simpsons, and still tour today. In.
Madonna is a band unto herself. You should be ashamed. In.
Prince is a musical genius and even you aren’t such a fool as to dispute his legend. In for always.
Releasing albums and touring is NOT the criteria. Richard Marx is still releasing albums. Depeche Mode is out. They have not been relevant since ’91.
Prince is a solo artist. Is he still with the Revolution? No? Didn’t think so!
Find me a band. JW put out Metallica. That’s the best one I’ve heard so far.
You really don’t get it. Prince is The Revolution.
Don’t mess with Prince. That’s worse than yo momma jokes.
I wouldn’t think of Metallica (because I can’t stand them) but it is a good one, JW.
I will counter Metallica with Danzig.
We could make an argument for Skinny Puppy inclusion, too.
B-52’s live!
What about Bon Jovi?
What about them? Blergh.
I think Bon Jovi is in. And I am not disputing the awesomeness of Prince. I’m just saying he isn’t a band.
Well, you have a lot of practice being wrong so I suppose it is comfy for you.
Or Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
Heartbreakers’ first gold record (their second album) was 1978. That’s why not them.
AC/DC , Bon Jovi , Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Now I would say U2 sold out by the time Mysterious Ways came out. I do like their original tunes much better then their 90’s stuff. Although its hard not to like them, always. As a side note, I did get to meet them when I did concert security way back in the day. They had bought the Event Security company I worked for and that was kinda cool. Kind of a sell out too when you think about a business move from a rebel band.
AC/DC first gold record was 1976.
they started in the 70’s no?
U2 used to play the pub up the road from my house, ‘The Blue Lagoon’ circa 1980. I saw them in 81 in the local dance hall, ‘I will follow’ was their big hit then. Many of us Irish folk have an odd relationship with Bono in particular – we generally hate it when he preaches on stage – and he used to do that a *lot* back in the Eighties. I was at Live Aid and, when he started poncing around with the girl from the audience, my mate Robbie and me were dead-annoyed (so we were) (Irishism).
Edge is quite good on his own, remember Rattle and Hum?
I like U2. As a Nation we are very proud of them but we have our reservations too. 🙂
I would think The Cure could count as they weren’t successful until the ’80s.
Motley Crue? Poison?
I hate the fact either were ever “successful” but I suppose you are, technically, correct. And Acadia is more wrong than ever, so yay!
What Vange said about Motley and Poison. Technically correct, but ick.
Metallica. Although some will say they sold out in the 90s, the same way as REM.
BTW, I’m a little late because I am still catching up on my blog reading since I got back from an out-of-town trip.
And U2 lost me after The Unforgettable Fire. I pretty much think that they had sold out to the mainstream by the late 80s.
Hate this song.
boooooooooooooooooooo hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssssssssssssssssss
