See that pic up there?  It has nothing to do with this week’s Friday 90’s song.  But, it DOES come from a movie that was famous in the nineties.  If you can guess what movie it’s from, I’ll send you (or the person of your choice as long as they know I’m sending it in on your behalf) a personalized email.  Seriously, I will.  I’m a total pervert.  And might this be a precursor to the return of Guess My Netflix?  Yes.  It might.

But as far as this week’s song is concerned, let’s dig into The Freshman by Verve Pipe.  I have read the lyrics (which are with the video after the jump) about 100 times and I have ZERO idea wtf it’s about.  I think someone dies.  Or someone shoves a shoe full of rice into a baby’s mouth?  Or maybe a baby got stuffed into a shoe?

No – someone definitely dies.  They say it too many times for there not to be some dying.  And face touching.  I remember in high school this kid told me that if you never touched your face you would never get a pimple.  Since it was too late for me to never touch my face (having touched it previously) I’ll never know if he was right.  But, as far as this song goes, I guess he WAS right, and that pimples are fatal.  Sad.

Verve Pipe – The Freshman

When I was young I knew everything
She, a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I’m guilt stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby’s breath and a shoe full of rice now

I can’t be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won’t be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week’s vacation to forget her
His girl took a weeks’ worth of Valium and slept
Now he’s guilt stricken sobbing with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says

I can’t be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won’t be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

We’ve tried to wash our hands of all this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we’re guilt stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we’d say

I can’t be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won’t be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen
