That’s right ladies and gentlemen, if you haven’t been paying attention, Weird Al is still at it, and he’s still absolutely killing it. Now, whenever I bring him up in conversation, I usually get a comment along the line of, “I don’t know what songs he’s parodying anymore.” I understand that sentiment completely, as just about all the songs he parodied on his previous album, Alpocalypse, I had never heard of before. But you know what? They were still funny. It’s not a necessity that you know the song he’s doing.
Besides, I’m not sure that’s going to be a problem with this album. You know that song, “Happy” by Pharrell? Of course you do. I do and I’ve not once sought that song out. It’s every freaking where. Al does that one. He released a video for it yesterday. In fact, he’s going to be releasing a new video every day for the next week, so you should keep hitting that link up every day. Today is going to be “Word Crimes”, which I’m guessing is going to be a parody of that rape song the dude with the stripy pants did, “Blurred Lines”. Who knows what else he has in store?
Let’s not forget that he also does original material as well, and while they usually don’t get a lot of attention, they are pretty darn good in their own right. Really, this is one of the few times you can buy a new album and be sure that you’re going to enjoy it. Unless, you know, you take music far too seriously, in which case you dismissed Weird Al a long time ago.
I think the best thing that’s going to come out of this new album is that he’s going to be touring again. If you’ve never seen Weird Al live, you are seriously missing out. It is a roaring good time. I highly recommend you catch the show when it comes near you. Especially now because there’s no telling how much longer Al’s going to be doing this. He’s been at it quite a while now. In fact, his career has lasted longer than many of the artists he’s parodied over the years.
Speaking of the ticking clock we have with Weird Al, I’d like to bring up another cause I’ve been trying to get off the ground for years now. Weird Al Yankovic MUST play the Super Bowl half time show. He is a perfect fit and will without a doubt put on a show that everyone can enjoy. With the new album, he’ll be fresh in the minds of the public. If there was ever a perfect time for him to do half time, it’s now. We need to make this happen, people.
So, buy the album. Get it from iTunes, Amazon, or go buy the CD if you still don’t know how to work the internet. Just get it. By any means necessary. Except illegal downloading. Al doesn’t like that.
This is outstanding news. I was pretty sure I couldn’t hear any version of “Happy” again without setting my face on fire, but the parody video was actually pretty great. Can’t wait to hear the rest this week!
Oh gosh. I’ve never thought of Weird Al as a Super Bowl halftime show act, and now it’s all I want in the world.
